Same calcium carbonate material as the coral sand, in chunks rather than grains.

The size changes what it is for. Coral sand is a display substrate you look at; rubble at 20–50mm is usually out of sight — in a sump chamber, in a filter, or as a base layer under sand. Water passes freely through pieces that size, so it buffers hardness and pH efficiently without compacting or clogging, and it is easy to scoop out and replace when it is spent.

In a rift lake tank it also works as a visible bed, where the broken-shell look suits the biotope better than uniform gravel.

Before you order

This raises hardness and pH — that is what it is for.
