It catches everything the water is carrying before that reaches the chemical and biological media behind it, which is what keeps a filter working rather than slowly clogging. Run coarse first and fine second: the coarse sheet takes the big debris and keeps the fine sheet from blinding within a week.

The part people get wrong

Wool is a mechanical medium and it is meant to be replaced, not preserved. It also grows a share of the tank's bacteria, so changing every sheet at once alongside a filter clean is how a mature tank ends up with a nitrite spike. Replace the wool on a different week to the biological media, and if you are changing several sheets, do half now and half in a fortnight.

Before you order

Sheets are meant to be cut. Cut slightly oversize so they seal against the tray walls — water goes around a loose sheet, not through it.

Fine wool clogs fastest and is the cheapest per sheet at 6 to a pack, which is deliberate: it is the consumable.

The rest of the filter media range is in the Bioscape collection, alongside our fish & aquarium supplies.

Bioscape filters & media on the brand site

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/6676/0120/files/BIS195_1_09ac9936-46b9-4472-93ea-639c70884acb.jpg?v=1793277586
