Bioscape describe it as light grey through to darker grey, with natural grooves, shapes and contours — the fissured, angular character that made this the default stone for nature-style and iwagumi scapes.

Buying by the box is the right way to buy hardscape. A scape needs one large stone, two or three mid-sized ones and a handful of small offcuts to bed the composition together; buying single pieces at retail almost never gives you that spread, and it costs far more per kilo. A 20kg box is roughly enough to build the hardscape in a 90–120cm tank, or to do a 60cm tank with stone left over.

Before you order

Sizes and shapes are mixed and vary between boxes — you are buying weight, not a specified set of pieces.

Bioscape's advice is to wash the rock thoroughly, which they say keeps any effect on pH minimal. If you keep soft-water fish or shrimp, it is worth checking your KH about a week after adding a large amount of any natural stone, and being ready to adjust.

Scrub under running water before it goes in — new hardscape carries dust that will cloud a tank for days.

The rest of the hardscape range is in the Bioscape collection, alongside our fish & aquarium supplies.

Bioscape substrates & hardscape on the brand site
