Dog Food Toppers & Mixers

Dog food toppers and mixers are the small additions that go over a regular meal — freeze dried raw, a wet topper, bone broth powder or a scoop of dried organ meat. Owners reach for them for two reasons: to restart a dog that has gone off its food, and to add something specific such as green tripe, bone broth or egg yolk without changing the whole diet.

Choosing a format

Freeze dried toppers crumble over kibble and keep the bowl dry. Ziwi Peak Boosters, the Kiwi Kitchens Super Food range and Meaty Treaty's freeze dried chicken and beef all work this way, and they store at room temperature. Wet toppers and broths do the opposite: they wet the meal down, which helps a dog that does not drink much and makes a dry dinner easier to finish. Powders such as Mio's Nature bone broth, pumpkin and egg yolk are the most flexible of the three, because you control the amount by the spoon.

How much to add

A topper is a garnish, not a second dinner. Start with a small amount over the usual serve and count it as part of the day's food, since freeze dried meat and organ in particular are concentrated. Introduce one new topper at a time and give it several days before adding another, so if something upsets the stomach you know what to drop. The feeding guide on the pack is set by your dog's weight — follow it rather than eyeballing the scoop.

What is in the collection

Ziwi Peak Boosters are sold by purpose: Gut & Immune Support with goat, Skin & Coat Health with mackerel, and Raw Superboost in lamb and venison. Kiwi Kitchens covers dry boosters in beef, lamb and fish plus canned salmon and lamb green tripe toppers. Inaba's Churu tubes and twin cups are the wettest and the most treat-like. Mio's Nature runs the powder side with beef, turmeric, green and mixed berry bone broths, plus egg yolk, pumpkin and chicken floss. Meaty Treaty, Feel Good Doggo and SalPet fill in the rest.
