Choosing a tank size

A larger volume of water is more stable: temperature and water chemistry shift more slowly, which makes a bigger tank more forgiving for a first setup. As a rough guide, 57-70L suits a small community of nano fish, 110-190L covers most community setups, and 240L and above allows larger species and heavier stocking.

Setting up

A new tank needs cycling before fish go in, which takes a few weeks while the filter builds its bacterial colony. Bacterial starters and a water conditioner speed that along, and a test kit tells you when ammonia and nitrite have settled.
