Which litter type suits your cat

Clumping bentonite clay forms firm balls that lift out whole, so daily scooping is quick, but it is the heaviest bag to carry and the most likely to track on paws. Tofu and soy litters are the largest group here and clump much like clay at a fraction of the weight; most are made to be flushed a scoop at a time, though the pack will tell you. Crystal litter absorbs rather than clumps, so you stir it through and change the tray as a whole. Bamboo, tapioca, pea husk and wood pellets are the low-dust end of the range, which matters if fine clay dust bothers you or the cat. Zeolite pellets sit in a dual-layer system, holding odour on the top layer while urine drains to a pad below.

Scent, kittens and switching over

Scent-free litters make it easier to notice a change in your cat's toileting, which is often the first sign something is wrong. Lightly fragranced options such as lavender and cherry blossom, and baking-soda formulas, mask odour between scoops instead.
