This collection brings together bird treats for cage and aviary birds — 11 products spanning seed and honey sticks, dried mealworms, millet sprays and skewered fruit and vegetable kabobs. Everything here is meant as an addition to a daily seed or pellet diet rather than a replacement for it, so a treat is something you clip into the cage for a few days of picking rather than a bowl filler.
Matching the treat to your bird
Size is the first thing to check. Trill Honeysticks are sold in separate budgie and cockatiel versions, and the Birdie Nibbler kabobs run from Small through Large to X-Large, so a budgie is better suited to a small walnut and fruit or capsicum and fruit kabob than to the jumbo corn segment and cucumber slice skewer built for a larger parrot. Beak strength matters as well: whole corn cob and zucchini pieces give a strong chewer something to work at, while millet sprays are soft enough for budgies and small finches to strip on their own.
Formats and what each one does
Sticks and skewers clip to the cage bars and turn eating into a foraging job, which is useful for a bird that spends long stretches alone. Loose treats such as Trill Toppers, or the Forage Gourmet Bird Seed pinecone, can be scattered, hung or offered by hand, which makes them handy while you are taming a new bird. Dried mealworms sit apart from the rest as an animal-protein treat and are usually offered in small amounts, particularly around a moult. Whatever the format, introduce anything new slowly and take it out if it is left untouched for more than a couple of days — dried fruit and vegetable pieces do not keep indefinitely in a warm cage.
