Wet Dog Food

Wet dog food is the tinned, potted and pouched side of a dog's diet — cans from Ziwi Peak and K9 Natural, slow cooked recipes from Prime100, loaf and gravy from Royal Canin, canned dinners from Kiwi Kitchens and pate from Zealandia. Wet food carries far more moisture than kibble, so it suits dogs that drink little, dogs coming back from dental work, and fussy eaters who leave dry food sitting in the bowl.

Cans, pouches, loaf or pate

Cans hold the most food per unit and are the usual choice for medium and large dogs; Ziwi Peak, K9 Natural and Kiwi Kitchens all run their dog ranges this way. Pouches are portioned per serve, so nothing is left over — Royal Canin Medium Puppy comes as 140g x 10 pouches. Loaf, gravy, pate and mousse describe texture rather than packaging: gravy recipes are pieces in liquid, loaf is a firm block you slice, pate is smooth throughout, and the Royal Canin Mother & Babydog Starter Ultra Soft Mousse is soft enough to lap. Texture matters most at the two ends of life, with weaning puppies and older dogs whose teeth are worn.

Life stage, breed and single proteins

Puppy recipes are labelled as such — Royal Canin Mini Puppy Gravy and Prime100's slow cooked puppy food with lamb and blueberry among them — and Royal Canin also makes a Mini Ageing gravy for older small dogs. Several Royal Canin loaves are cut to breed, with Poodle, Dachshund and Pomeranian each getting their own, while Digestive Care and Relax Care are built around a purpose instead. If you are working through a suspected food sensitivity with your vet, this collection runs deep in less common single proteins: venison, kangaroo, wild boar, duck, goat, wallaby, brushtail, turkey, hoki and mackerel all appear.

Brands in this collection

Ziwi Peak covers both the standard cans and the Provenance range named after New Zealand places — Hauraki Plains, Otago Valley and East Cape. Prime100 SPD slow cooked pairs one named meat with one plant ingredient in every recipe, which makes label reading simple. K9 Natural and Kiwi Kitchens lean on lamb, beef, chicken and fish, including a mackerel and lamb dinner. Royal Canin is the broadest by count, spanning gravy, loaf, mousse and pouches. Zealandia's pates and Absolute Holistic's home cooked style round out the softer end.
