Eight small animal treats for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small herbivores, all of them Oxbow. How much is a treat

A rabbit or guinea pig runs on hay, a measured pellet ration and fresh greens. Treats sit outside that and should stay a very small share of what goes in each day — a couple of pieces, not a handful, and broken in half again for a dwarf rabbit, a mouse or a rat. The point of them is not nutrition, it is handling. A treat is what makes a nervous guinea pig come to the front of the cage, what gets a rabbit onto the scales, and what turns a nail trim from a wrestle into a routine. Feed them by hand rather than scattering them so the animal associates you with the good thing.

Which one to pick

The fruit-based treats — Apple & Banana and Cranberry — carry the most sugar, so they are the ones to keep occasional, and the ones to be most careful with for an animal already carrying condition. Carrot & Dill, Bell Pepper and the Veggie Treats are vegetable-led and sit more comfortably in an everyday routine. Simple Rewards Timothy Treats are hay-based, which makes them the closest thing here to something you can hand over regularly without doing the sums. Peppermint is the herb-led option. Organic Rewards Barley Biscuits are a certified organic grain biscuit, the outlier in the set. Introduce any new treat one at a time and in small amounts, and stop if droppings change.
