Reptile Cleaning Supplies

Our reptile cleaning supplies cover the two jobs that keep an enclosure liveable: treating the water in a turtle tank, and cleaning the surfaces of the enclosure itself. Nine products sit here from API, Exo Terra, URS, Nutrafin and Vetafarm, split roughly two to one between turtle water conditioners and clarifiers on one side, and cage and habitat cleaners on the other.

Water conditioners versus surface cleaners

A water conditioner goes into the tank and stays there. API Turtle Water Conditioner, Exo Terra Turtle Clean Water Conditioner and Nutrafin Basix Turtle Conditioner are dosed at a water change to make mains water suitable for the animal, neutralising chlorine and related tap-water additives rather than removing solid waste. The API Turtle Sludge Destroyer and the URS Ultimate Turtle Neutraliser Block work on the waste side instead, aimed at the organic sludge and odour that build up under a basking turtle. The Exo Terra Moss Ball Water Clarifier is a clarifier, which helps fine suspended matter clump together so the filter can catch it; that answers cloudy water rather than the cause of it, so pair it with a look at feeding and filtration.

Cleaners are the opposite. They are applied to a surface, worked in, then rinsed or wiped away, and are never left in the water. URS Cage Cleaner and Vetafarm Enclosure Clean are made for the inside of an enclosure, where kitchen cleaners are a poor idea because residues and strong fragrances linger on glass, substrate and hides. The Exo Terra Turtle Habitat Cleaning Kit gathers the tools for the same job in a turtle setup.

Building a cleaning routine

Most keepers split the work three ways: a partial water change with a conditioner on a regular cycle for a turtle tank, spot-cleaning of soiled substrate and waste as it appears, and a full strip-and-clean of the enclosure on a longer interval. Take the animal out before using any surface cleaner, follow the contact time on the label, and rinse thoroughly before the enclosure goes back into service. Dose rates and contact times differ between brands and between a water treatment and a surface product, so read the pack in front of you rather than assuming the last bottle applies.
