Floor space, height and the animal you keep
Settle first whether your reptile lives on the ground or in the branches, because everything else follows. Terrestrial species such as bearded dragons, blue-tongues and most pythons use floor area, so a long, wide enclosure is worth more than a tall one; length also lets you set a warm end and a cool end, since a thermal gradient needs distance. Arboreal species climb, so height and vertical furniture matter more than footprint. Exo Terra Natural Terrariums come in several sizes, so choose the footprint against the adult size of the animal, not its size now.

Whichever reptile enclosure you choose, three things matter as much as the box itself. A secure, lockable lid, because snakes and lizards are very good at finding gaps. Ventilation, so humidity does not build up into condensation and mould. And a thermostat on every heat source, since an unregulated heat mat or globe can overheat an enclosure quickly. If you are buying for a young python or dragon, size the enclosure against the adult animal and plan the upgrade now: moving to the next size up is cheaper as a planned purchase than as an emergency one.
