Matching the food to the life stage
Growing reptiles and adults do not eat the same way, which is why several of these ranges are sold in stages rather than as one universal bag. Exo Terra turtle food comes as Hatchling, Juvenile and Adult floating pellets, and the pellet size steps up with each one so a young turtle can actually take the piece into its mouth. URS Lizard Food follows the same logic with separate Juvenile and Adult formulas, and the Exo Terra bearded dragon soft pellets are also split into Juvenile and Adult. As a rule the younger animal eats more often and takes more of its intake as protein, while adults move towards a larger share of plant matter and fibre. Feed the stage the animal is at now rather than the one you bought last, and change over gradually.
Pellets, floating food and how they fit the diet
Turtle pellets are made to float so you can see what has been eaten and lift out what has not, since uneaten food is the main reason turtle water goes off. Nutrafin Max Turtle Pellets include Gammarus shrimp, a dried crustacean most turtles take readily, which can be useful with a fussy feeder. Lizard and bearded dragon products work the other way around: the Exo Terra soft pellets are moistened before feeding, while Vetafarm Lizard Food and URS Lizard Food are dry mixes. None of these replace the live insects, fresh greens and calcium dusting that a captive reptile diet is usually built around, so treat them as the prepared part of the plan rather than the whole of it. Store opened packs sealed and dry, and check the terrarium temperatures before you worry about appetite, because a reptile kept below its preferred range will often stop eating regardless of what is offered.
