The tray is the part of living with a cat that needs the most upkeep, and this is the gear that makes it manageable. Our cat litter clean-up accessories range covers scoops, anti-scatter and trapping mats, cat litter deodorisers, absorbent pads for dual-layer systems, and the cleaners and disinfectants used when a tray gets a proper wash. It sits alongside the litter itself rather than replacing it: choose the litter first, then match the clean-up gear to the tray you already own.

Choosing a litter mat

A mat catches the granules a cat carries out on its paws, and the main decision is size. The mats here run from a compact M-Pets Footprint mat at 42x32cm, through the M-Pets paw shape at 60x45cm and rectangular at 60x89cm, up to a D.GS Dog Gone Smart mat at 66x88cm. Measure the floor in front of the tray, then size up if your cat is an enthusiastic digger — the bigger the landing zone, the less litter reaches the hallway. Trapping mats such as the Kit Cat Litter Trapping Mat use a textured or dual-layer surface that holds granules until you tip them back into the tray; the CatMate Anti-Scatter Litter Mat is the flatter style that is quicker to sweep and easier to hose off.

Deodorisers, absorbent pads and cleaners

These three do different jobs and are often confused. Deodorisers go into or beside the litter and are aimed at odour between changes — Kit Cat Deodorising Litter Sprinkles, the CatMate tray deodoriser, and the Nature's Miracle air freshener attachment that clips to a hooded box. Absorbent pads from Ezi-LockOdour line the lower tray of a dual-layer system so the litter above stays drier. Cleaners and disinfectants are for the empty tray: F10 SC, F10 SCXD in pine and clear, F10 wipes and an aerosol fogger. Follow the dilution printed on the label, and rinse and dry a tray before refilling it.
