A cat litter mat sits where your cat steps out of the tray and catches the granules carried out on its paws before they spread across the floor. The mats here come from M-Pets, Kit Cat, CatMate and D.GS Dog Gone Smart, in sizes from 42x32cm up to 66x88cm.
Size first
Size matters more than pattern. A cat usually takes a step or two before the last granules drop, so a mat should be at least as wide as the tray and run well past the entry. The M-Pets Footprint mat (42x32cm) suits a compact tray or a tight corner. The M-Pets Paw (60x45cm) and CatMate Anti-Scatter (45x60cm) cover a standard tray, while the M-Pets Rectangular (60x89cm) and Dog Gone Smart (66x88cm) give a bigger landing zone for keen diggers, hooded trays with a front exit, or two trays side by side.
Trapping or flat
Trapping mats such as the Kit Cat Litter Trapping Mat use a textured or double-layer surface that holds granules until you tip them back into the tray or the bin. Flat anti-scatter mats are quicker to sweep, shake out or hose off. Light litters, such as tofu pellets and crystal, tend to travel further than heavy clay, so if you use them, a larger mat or a trapping mat earns its place.
Keeping it clean
Shake or vacuum the mat when you scoop, and wash it when you do a full litter change, so odour does not build up around the tray. Place it on the side your cat actually steps out, which is not always the front.
