Tofu Cat Litter

Tofu cat litter is plant-based clumping litter made from soy, pea or other plant fibre pressed into small pellets. It clumps around urine much as clay does, but weighs a fraction as much, raises far less dust, and most brands allow small amounts to be flushed. How it behaves in the tray

The pellets are larger and lighter than clay granules, so a bag is easier to carry and less litter is kicked out, but a clump left sitting in the tray can soften and stick to the base. Scoop at least daily and keep the litter deep enough, around 5cm, that clumps never reach the floor of the tray. Do a full change every few weeks rather than only topping up.

Flushing

Most tofu litters are sold as flushable, but only in small amounts: send a scoop at a time rather than a whole tray, and read the pack before flushing into a septic system or older plumbing.

Choosing between them

Scented versions, such as green tea, charcoal, peach and lavender, mask odour between scoops; unscented original formulas make it easier to notice a change in your cat's urine.
