Small Animal Bedding & Litter

Ten lines of small animal bedding and litter for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and rats: nine Kaytee Clean & Cozy paper beddings and the Back 2 Nature Small Animal Bedding and Litter, a recycled paper pellet. Everything on this page is paper-based rather than wood shavings, which suits animals that spend their lives with their noses in their bedding.
Loose bedding or pelleted litter
The two do different jobs and plenty of people use both. Loose paper bedding, such as the Clean & Cozy range, is soft, expands when teased apart, and is what a hamster or mouse burrows into and a guinea pig sleeps on. Pelleted paper litter, such as Back 2 Nature, is denser and holds its shape, which makes it the better choice in a corner tray or under a hay rack where the mess concentrates. A common setup is a shallow layer of pellets in the litter corner and loose bedding through the rest of the cage — the pellets absorb the worst of it and the bedding stays usable longer.
Depth, changing and odour
Bedding is often laid too thin. Burrowing species use depth, and a deeper layer also spreads urine rather than letting it pool, so the cage stays drier between changes. Spot-clean the wet corner every day or two and do a full change weekly, adjusting for how many animals share the cage. Odour is almost always a cleaning-frequency problem before it is a product problem, though Kaytee makes Clean & Cozy Extreme Odor Control and Clean & Cozy Natural Paper with Extreme Odor Control for cages that need the extra help. If you would rather see the mess than smell it, Clean & Cozy White shows soiling immediately; the coloured versions hide it.
What is on this page
Kaytee Clean & Cozy comes in Natural, White, Lavender, Confetti and the Colors range — Plum, Sunset and Kaleidoscope — plus the two Extreme Odor Control versions. Back 2 Nature is the single pelleted option, sold as both bedding and litter. The word Odor is spelled the American way in the Kaytee product names; that is the brand's own labelling.
