Dog Calming & Anxiety

Dog calming and anxiety covers chews, powders, capsules, sprays, collars and a plug-in diffuser. They divide into two groups — supplements you feed with a meal, and pheromone or scent products you put on the dog, on bedding or into the room. Several are labelled for cats as well. None of them is a sedative or a replacement for training, so if your dog panics when left alone or the behaviour is getting worse, talk to your vet or a qualified behaviourist about a plan first.

Matching the format to the situation

For a one-off event — a car trip, a vet visit, a storm, fireworks — something you can reach for on the day makes more sense. Adaptil Transport Spray goes onto bedding or a crate liner, ThunderEssence is a scent-based essential oil, and the Adaptil Calm Collar and Junior/Puppy Collar travel with the dog. The Adaptil Calm Diffuser covers a room and suits the house rather than the outing. Fed supplements — ThunderWunders Calming Chews, PAW by Blackmores Complete Calm, Natural Animal Solutions Calm — are aimed at the ongoing, everyday version of the problem and are generally given consistently rather than once.

Read the label before you buy

Two things catch people out. Size first: the Zylkene range is split into separate strengths for cats and small dogs, for medium dogs and for large dogs, and PAW by Blackmores lists a small-dog version of Complete Calm, so match the weight band rather than guessing. Ingredients second: several products name theirs in the title, such as the PAW by Blackmores Multivitamin & Tryptophan Chews, while ZamiPet High Strength Probiotics+ Relax & Calm and Protexin Veterinary Serenicare pair calming ingredients with probiotics. If your dog is already on medication, or is pregnant, check with your vet before you add anything.
