Dog training and cleaning supplies cover the unglamorous half of owning a dog, spanning poo bags and dispensers, treat and training pouches, clickers, toilet training, wipes, disinfectants and nappies. Almost all of it is consumable, so it pays to know what you are re-buying and why one version differs from the next.

Training gear

Clicker training needs two things within reach at the same moment, the marker and the reward. The clicker comes in a standard and a Deluxe version, and the treat pouches run in waist and shoulder styles with drawstring closures, mesh pockets and zip pockets. A pouch that opens one-handed matters more than how much it holds, because you will be opening it every few seconds. For toilet training, a training pad holder clamps the pad so it cannot be dragged around the room, and a puppy potty training spray marks the spot you want your dog to use.

Clean-up and hygiene

Poo bags divide into compostable, biodegradable and degradable, and those words are not interchangeable — Oh Crap and Korure Pets sell compostable bags, so check the pack for which certification applies. Bags with handles are easier to tie off, and several dispensers clip straight to a lead. Wipes are the between-baths option: Absorb Plus antibacterial and charcoal wipes come 80 sheets to a pack at 20 x 15cm, Squeaky Pet runs a fragrance free probiotic line split into body, ear and eye, and The New Zealand Natural adds manuka honey pet wipes. For hard surfaces rather than the dog, F10 covers a veterinary disinfectant concentrate, SCXD cleanser in pine and clear, wipes and an aerosol fogger. Nappies and male wraps cover in-season, incontinent or recovering dogs, and Dog Rocks is a water bowl product aimed at lawn burn from dog urine.
