What the formats actually mean

Dry food is extruded kibble — complete, shelf stable and easy to measure. Wet food is cooked and sealed in cans, trays or pouches, and carries far more moisture per serve. Air-dried food, such as Ziwi Peak and Prime100 SPD, has water removed gently so the meat inclusion stays high without freezing or refrigeration. Freeze-dried food and raw-alternative ranges from K9 Natural, Feline Natural and ADDICTION go a step further and are usually rehydrated before serving. Ziwi's steam-and-dried range and Absolute Holistic's home-cooked wet trays sit between the two. Toppers, mixers and boosters are not complete diets — they are there to add flavour or a targeted nutrient on top of one.

Matching a diet to the animal

Three things narrow the choice quickly. Life stage first: puppy and kitten formulas are energy-dense for growth, adult formulas hold weight, and senior formulas ease back on calories. Size and living pattern second — large-breed dog formulas manage growth rate and joint load, while indoor cat formulas manage weight and hairballs. Sensitivities third: single-protein and novel-protein diets built on kangaroo, venison, brushtail or fish give you something to rotate to when chicken or beef is the suspect. Treats follow the same reasoning, and dental chews are the one treat category that does a second job.
