Bloodworms are a treat rather than a staple, and it is worth being clear about why. They are high in protein and low in the fibre and plant matter most community fish need, so fish fed heavily on bloodworm can become constipated and, in the case of fancy goldfish and bettas, prone to buoyancy problems. Feed them two or three times a week alongside a staple flake or pellet, not instead of one. Dried bloodworm also swells after it is swallowed — soaking a pinch in tank water before feeding is the standard precaution.
