Trays, mats and scoops

An open tray with a rim, such as the M-Pets Sherbin, is the fastest to scoop and the easiest for a kitten or an older cat to step into. Hooded kits give a nervous cat privacy and keep kicked litter inside. CatMate's three-piece tray set and five-piece kit bundle the tray with the scoop and liner so you are not buying the parts one at a time. Mats do most of the work on tracking, and footprint matters more than pattern: M-Pets makes 42x32cm, 60x45cm and 60x89cm mats, Dog Gone Smart a 66x88cm one, and Kit Cat and CatMate make trapping and anti-scatter versions with a textured surface that pulls granules off paws. Place it on the side the cat steps out. Match the scoop to the litter as well: fine slots hold crystal and tofu granules in the tray, wider slots suit clay clumps. The Trouble and Trix scoop comes with its own holder, and Catit makes a large-format scoop.

Odour control between changes

Deodorisers work with scooping, not instead of it. Sprinkles and granules such as Kit Cat Deodorising Litter Sprinkles 240g and CatMate Litter Tray Deodoriser are mixed through the litter. Beads sit in or beside the tray and release fragrance slowly, including Kojima's cherry blossom, berry and jasmine beads and the M-Pets FRESH Pearls 450ml tub. Ezi-LockOdour takes a different route: its standard, XL and hooded dual-layer kits pair a top layer of non-clumping pellets with an absorbent pad underneath, so urine drains away and you replace the pad rather than turning out the whole tray. Extra absorbent pads are sold separately for those kits.
