Cats are harder to bribe than dogs, so cat treats are less about reward and more about interest. Crunchy dental treats are the third group, and they only earn their place if your cat actually chews rather than swallowing whole.

The most useful trick with cat treats has nothing to do with treating. Crumbled over a meal, a freeze dried chicken breast or a green lipped mussel turns a bowl your cat has walked away from into one it will finish, and it is a far easier way to tempt a fussy or recovering cat than any additive. It is also how many owners introduce the smell and texture of raw food before changing the diet.

Keep the quantity small. Cats are little animals and treats add up quickly, so keep them to a small share of daily kilojoules and reduce meals to match.
