Cat Trees & Towers

A cat tree gives a cat somewhere to climb, perch and scratch that is not the back of your lounge. Cats rest above floor level by instinct, and a tall cat tower is often the thing that settles a nervous cat in a busy house — it gives them a vantage point and a place to retreat to that the dog or the toddler cannot reach.

Height is the first decision, and taller is not automatically better. A two-level frame suits a kitten or an older cat whose jumping days are behind it; a full-height tower suits a confident adult that already climbs the bookshelves. Measure the ceiling height in the spot you have in mind before buying, and leave clearance above the top platform so the cat can actually sit up there.

Stability matters more than most people expect. A cat landing on the top platform from a run-up puts real sideways force through the frame, and a light tower that rocks will stop being used after the first wobble. Look for a wide base, and for timber frames over moulded board if the cat is large.

Surfaces come down to what your cat already scratches. Sisal rope and sisal board take vertical clawing and last; carpet is softer underfoot for sleeping but shreds faster under claws; corrugated cardboard is cheap, very popular with cats, and designed to be replaced rather than to last.
