Dog carriers, dog strollers and travel accessories — the gear for getting a dog to the vet, on to a tram, into the car or around a market without walking the whole way. Ibiyaya supplies most of it, with rigid plastic carriers from Ferplast and Catit alongside.

Carrier or stroller?

A carrier is what you lift; a stroller is what you push. Carriers split into hard sided and soft sided. Hard sided models such as the Ferplast Atlas Car, Binny 2 and JET keep their shape, take a knock in the boot and wipe out easily, which makes them the steadier choice for car travel or an unsettled dog. Soft sided carriers — the Ibiyaya Classic Eva, Colour Play, canvas tote and the backpack styles — are lighter, collapse for storage and sit more comfortably against your body on foot. Backpacks leave both hands free, and the two-tier double version carries two small dogs. Strollers take over once a dog is too heavy to carry for any distance, or when an older or recovering dog can manage the outing but not the walking.

Reading the weight ratings

Capacity is the first number to check, and it varies widely: the Ibiyaya Gentle Giant wagon is rated to 25kg, the Luxury Retro foldable to 30kg and the Grand Cruiser to 50kg. A dog near the top of a rating also needs floor length to lie down, so read the internal dimensions on the listing as well as the weight. Terrain comes next — the three-wheeled joggers, tri-cycle trailers and beach wagon handle grass and gravel more easily than small castors do, while the compact folding buggies are easier to lift on to public transport or into a lift.
