Clipper or grinder?

Scissor-style clippers suit most dogs and give the most control on thick nails. Guillotine clippers are quick on small and medium dogs. A grinder files the nail down gradually, which makes it easier to stop short of the quick, and it leaves a smooth edge, but some dogs need time to get used to the noise and vibration.

Trimming tips

Take a little off often rather than a lot at once. The quick grows out with the nail, so regular short trims let it recede over time. On dark nails, where you cannot see the quick, work in thin slices or use a grinder.

Handle your dog's paws regularly before you start, and reward calm behaviour, so trimming does not become a fight.
