Hygain is an Australian equine nutrition company milling horse feeds and supplements for the local market. The range splits into four groups: everyday and conditioning feeds (All Rounder, Ice, Tru Care, Balanced), racing and performance mueslis (Edge, Micrspeed, Powatorque, Racetorque, Tracktorque, Release, Showtorque, Victory), breeding and growing feeds (Prodigy, Grotorque, Studtorque, Tru Breed and the five-stage Prime EQ programme), and fed supplements (Allcare, Digest & Protect, Gleam, Hoofgain, Pak-Cell, Regain, RBO, SafeGuard EQ, Sporthorse).
How to choose — start from the horse's workload and its reaction to starch, not from the bag design. A horse in light work or spelling wants All Rounder or Tru Care. A good doer that is holding weight but lacks topline wants a balancer such as Balanced or Meta Safe, fed at a small rate, rather than a bigger hard feed. A horse that does the work but gets sharp on grain wants Ice, Fibressential or Tru Beet, where the energy comes from fibre and fat instead of starch. Only horses in genuine racing or hard competition work need the performance mueslis, and feeding those at full rates to a horse in light work is the most common and most expensive mistake in the range.
Metabolic and laminitis-prone horses — Meta Safe (maximum 1.5% starch, cereal grain-free) and Zero (35% fibre, low NSC) are the two products formulated for this group. Tru Beet and Fibressential are also low-starch, but they carry more energy, so they suit a metabolic horse that also needs condition.
The Micr range (Micrbarley, Micrlupins, Micrmaize) are straights — single micronised grains, not balanced diets. They need a balancer or a fortified feed beside them.
