Brush, comb or rake?
A slicker brush is the workhorse for most coats: fine bent wires that lift out loose undercoat and break up small tangles. The Gripsoft Slicker Brush is the standard version; the Soft Pin Slicker uses gentler pins and is the one to choose for puppies, thin coats and dogs that flinch at the firmer type. Combs come after the brush, not before — they find what the brush missed. The Comb Fine is for finishing and for face and feather work, while the Rotating Comfort Comb has pins that turn as they pass through, which reduces pulling on long or tangle-prone coats. The Double Row Undercoat Rake is for thick double coats — it reaches the dense layer under the topcoat, which a slicker alone cannot clear during a heavy moult.
Deshedding, flea combs and nails
The Shedding Blade is a seasonal tool rather than an everyday one. It pulls out a lot of dead coat quickly on a short-haired dog, but used too often or too hard it takes live hair with it, so keep the pressure light. The Flea Comb has teeth spaced tightly enough to trap fleas and flea dirt; it is a detection and removal tool, not a treatment, so pair it with a proper parasite product if you find anything. On nails, the Nail Clipper Deluxe is the dog-sized plier clipper and the Cat Nail Clipper is the smaller scissor type for cats and very small dogs. Take a little off at a time and stop well short of the quick — several short trims beat one long one, especially with a pet that is new to having its feet handled.
