Everything KONG makes for dogs, from the red Classic rubber most people picture when they hear the name through to plush, rope, balls and treat-dispensing feeders.

Start with the rubber grade rather than the shape. Puppy rubber is soft enough for milk teeth, red Classic covers most household dogs, black Extreme is the firmest compound and purple Senior is softened for older mouths. A dog that empties a red KONG in five minutes is not being badly behaved; it is on the wrong grade of rubber. Size up rather than down whenever your dog sits between two sizes, because the whole toy should never fit behind the molars.

The stuffable shapes earn their keep when they are filled and frozen. Wet food or Easy Treat, packed in and frozen solid, turns a ten-minute chew into a much longer one and gives you something reliable for crate time or vet-ordered rest. Count the filling as part of the day's food.

Fabric toys work differently. Wubba, Cozie, Snuzzles and the rope range are for interactive play with a person on the other end; they are not chew-proof and are not sold as such. Check every toy over regularly and retire anything losing pieces.
