Nerf dog toys are the pet range that carries the Nerf name — fetch, tug and chew toys, not the foam-dart blasters. PeekAPaw currently lists 28 Nerf Dog toys and 7 Nerf Cat toys, split across several very different material families. Working out which family you are buying matters more than picking the shape.
Which Nerf range suits your dog
Tennis Ball & Blaster. The Tennis Ball Blaster launches a standard 6.25cm ball one-handed, which saves your shoulder over a long session. Buy balls alongside it: the 12-pack of 6.25cm squeak tennis balls is the refill, and the 4-pack of medium balls suits a shorter walk. If your dog strips and eats tennis balls rather than fetching them, this is the wrong range to start with.
Scentology. Scented rubber in bacon, chicken, beef, and bacon-and-peanut-butter. The scent sits in the rubber rather than in a filling, so there is nothing to refill and nothing edible in them — they are not treat dispensers. Their real use is a dog that walks past an unscented toy.
GRS Nylon and X Weave. Recycled-fabric tugs, rings, discs and crinkle toys. Light, soft-sided and good for two-handed tug or a carry-back retrieve, but fabric is not armour: a determined shredder will open one. Supervise, and retire it once the crinkle layer or stitching starts to go.
Rubber Bash, LED and TPR Exo. The firmer end of the range. The LED versions are built for fetch at dusk — switch the light on and check it before you rely on finding the toy in a dark yard. TPR Exo pieces are open frames rather than solid bodies, so they are lighter to carry and easier for a smaller mouth to pick up.
Armour Ball. A hard shell over a rubber core, the closest thing in this range to a heavy-chewer ball. Still not indestructible — no toy is, and any dog that removes a piece should lose the toy.
Nerf Cat
The cat side is short and simple: catnip plush in bird, cat, duck, fish, octopus and snake shapes, plus a blaster that fires catnip discs. One thing worth knowing first — the response to catnip is inherited, and a sizeable minority of cats do not react to it at all. If yours is one of them the plush toys still work, because the bell and the shape carry the play, but the catnip will not be doing the work.
