Royal Canin Dental Care is a daily retail dry food for dogs and cats whose teeth need some help between brushings. It is a normal everyday food, not a veterinary diet, and it is not a replacement for a vet check: visible tartar, receding gums or a sudden change in breath needs looking at properly.
The way it works is unusual enough to be worth explaining. The kibble is made deliberately large and given a fibrous internal structure, so a tooth sinks into the piece instead of snapping it on contact. As the tooth travels through, those fibres scrub the tooth surface, giving a mechanical brushing effect at every mouthful. It only works if the animal really chews, which is why the pieces are sized generously and why a gulper gets less out of the food than a careful eater. Working alongside that, calcium chelators bind calcium in the saliva, leaving less of it free to mineralise soft plaque into hard tartar. Royal Canin's internal testing puts the reduction at up to 69% for Mini Dental Care in dogs, and up to 59% over 28 days for the cat formula.
Because kibble size has to suit the jaw, the dog range is split by adult body weight, not by what the dog weighs today: Mini Dental Care in 3kg for dogs up to 10kg, Medium Dental Care in 3kg and 10kg for 11-25kg dogs, and Maxi Dental Care in 9kg for 26-44kg dogs. Giving a small dog the Maxi kibble defeats the point, because the piece is too big to bite into cleanly and the brushing action is lost.
For cats there is one formula, in 400g, 1.5kg, 3.5kg and 8kg. There is no wet version, and that is deliberate: moist food cannot deliver the abrasion. If you also feed pouches, the dry portion is the part doing the dental work.
