Royal Canin Hairball Care

Royal Canin Hairball Care is a daily cat food for cats that swallow a lot of hair and bring it back up again. A cat spends a good part of its waking day grooming, and a barbed tongue is very good at collecting loose coat. Most of that hair passes through unnoticed; the trouble starts when it collects in the stomach faster than it clears.

The approach here is different from a malt or petroleum hairball paste, and the two are easy to confuse. A paste lubricates so a hairball already forming can slide on. This food changes what happens further along: a specific blend of dietary fibres including psyllium, which is rich in mucilage, helps stimulate intestinal transit so swallowed hair keeps moving and leaves in the stool rather than being regurgitated. Royal Canin's internal testing reports reduced hairball formation within 14 days on the dry formula. Because it works through transit, it is a food you feed every day, not something you reach for after an episode.

Two groups of cats get the most from it. Long-haired cats, where there is simply more coat to swallow, and any cat in a heavy moult, which in most Australian households means spring and autumn but can be close to year-round for indoor cats under artificial light. Brushing several times a week does the other half of the job by removing loose hair before the cat can eat it.
