Ruffey is an Australian pet food brand, and the range we stock is a focused one: air dried dog food recipes and nothing else. Air drying sits between raw and kibble — the meat is dried slowly at low heat to draw moisture out rather than being cooked hard and extruded — and the result is a dense, shelf-stable food you can feed from the bag without freezing or thawing anything.
How air dried food is fed
The first thing to understand is portion size. Air dried food has had most of its water removed, so a serving looks alarmingly small next to the same dog's usual bowl of kibble. Weigh it against the feeding chart rather than judging by eye, and make sure fresh water is always available, because the moisture your dog would normally get from a wet or raw diet is not coming from the food. Introduce it over about a week, mixing an increasing share into the current food, and watch stool consistency as you go.
It also works as a topper rather than a whole diet. Crumbling a small amount over dry food is a common way to get a fussy dog eating, or to add a different protein to an otherwise repetitive bowl — just take the equivalent out of the main meal so the day's total does not creep up. The dense format travels well too, which makes it useful for camping and long days out where refrigeration is not an option.
The recipes
Kangaroo and Venison are the single-protein options, and they are the ones to look at first if you are trying to avoid the common proteins a dog has already eaten a lot of — kangaroo in particular is a genuinely novel protein for most Australian dogs. Beef & Salmon, Lamb & Salmon and Chicken & Salmon each pair a red or white meat with salmon, which brings marine fat into the recipe alongside the main protein. Rotating between two or three recipes is a reasonable habit if your dog tolerates change well, since it varies the amino acid and fat profile across the week. Check each pack for the feeding guide, as recommended amounts differ between recipes.
