1, Introduction

We believe in transparency with our customers, which is why we want to explain our decision regarding three popular pet food brands: Ziwi, Taste of The Wild, and Zealandia.

These three brands are exclusively distributed in Australia by ARNHEM PET PRODUCTS PTY LTD or Very Pet, who attempted to control our retail pricing. However, our first priority has always been to provide our customers with the best possible discounts and value.

When we refused to comply with their price control requirements, Arnhem responded by increasing our wholesale prices by 15% - a penalty specifically targeting our commitment to competitive pricing.

Rather than compromise on our core value of offering great prices to our customers, we made the difficult decision to discontinue our partnership with Arnhem and stop carrying these brands.

We remain committed to sourcing high-quality pet products from suppliers who share our values of fair pricing and putting customers first.

2, Timeline of Events

July 26, 2024 (Friday): I(Allen) placed a routine order as usual, which was quickly marked as fulfilled. An Arnhem employee contacted me saying that one of their co-founders, Jayde, wanted to speak with me. At the time, I was suffering from severe flu with throat issues and persistent coughing, so I replied that I would call back the following week when I felt better.

July 30, 2024: I inquired about our order status, as we normally receive orders by the 29th but hadn't received this one. Arnhem informed us that our order had been held by Jayde, who insisted on speaking with me first. Despite still being unwell with flu, I proactively called but couldn't reach Jayde as he had left work early.

July 31, 2024: I finally connected with Jayde for approximately 6 minutes. Within 10 minutes of hanging up, our account was locked and we couldn't log in. That afternoon, we received an account reactivation invitation. Upon reactivation, all wholesale prices had increased by 15%. Our held order was released that afternoon, and we received the complete order on August 1st.

August 1, 2024: We placed one final order to preserve evidence of the price increase.

August 6, 2024: We received our final order, officially ending our business relationship with Arnhem.

3, The Phone Call - What Was Actually Discussed?

There is no doubt that this phone call was the direct cause of the price increase imposed on us. So what exactly was discussed during this conversation?

The conversation centered around our discount practices and promotional activities. Jayde stated that we were only allowed to offer 10% off, and that every discount required their prior approval. However, we were aware that many other retailers were offering 20% or higher discounts. I emphasized that this restriction was unfair to us and pointed out that controlling prices and holding orders due to pricing disputes is illegal in Australia.

4, Is This Illegal in Australia?

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), this behavior is clearly illegal. The ACCC explicitly prohibits resale price maintenance, which includes:

  • Suppliers setting minimum prices that retailers must charge
  • Suppliers restricting discounts or promotional activities
  • Suppliers penalizing retailers for their pricing decisions

Despite this, Arnhem insists they have the right to determine our wholesale prices and restrict the duration and extent of our discount activities.

We will be reporting this matter to the ACCC and will provide real-time updates on the progress of this case on this page.

5, What Has Arnhem Actually Done?

The evidence speaks for itself:

  1. Monopolistic Distribution: All brands distributed by Arnhem are exclusive arrangements, legally avoiding competition in the Australian market.

  2. Restricted Discounting: Apart from near-expiry clearance products, it's extremely rare to see discounts exceeding 20% on their brands in the market.

  3. The Ziwi Example: Since April 2025, when Arnhem became the exclusive distributor of Ziwi and we stopped purchasing from them, 50% off Ziwi products completely disappeared from the Australian market. Prior to this, we ran 50% off promotions almost every two months, and competitors would match our pricing to stay competitive.

  4. The Orijen Price Drop: The most telling evidence came in April 2025 when Champion Pet reclaimed the exclusive distribution rights for Orijen from Arnhem. On day one, they reduced dog food prices by 10%, followed by another 10% reduction six months later, and cat food prices dropped by 20%. It's hard to imagine that Arnhem was earning excessive profits on their exclusive brands while simultaneously preventing Australian consumers from accessing better discounts.

6, What Can You Do About This Distributor?

We can guarantee with our business reputation that all the information above is completely true. If Arnhem wishes to refute any of these points, we will provide additional evidence to substantiate our claims.
