Tablets pushed into the gravel to feed plants where root-feeders actually take nutrients up. Swords, crypts and vallisneria draw most of their food through the substrate, and no amount of liquid fertiliser in the water column reaches them properly — which is the usual reason a well-lit tank still has pale, stunted rosettes. API names iron, potassium and carbon among the nutrients supplied.
The corollary is that stem plants and floating plants feed from the water and get little out of these, so most planted tanks run root tabs and a liquid fertiliser together rather than choosing between them.
How to use them
- One tablet per 30 square inches (about 190 cm²) of gravel surface
- Push each tablet midway into the gravel bed, near the root zone
- Ten tablets per pack
- Freshwater planted aquariums; safe with tropical fish
For the water column: API Leaf Zone and CO2 Booster.
