A filter pillow that lowers general hardness — the calcium and magnesium content of tap water — for keepers of soft-water species who are working against hard supply water. It also takes out some heavy metals and reduces the mineral scale that builds up on glass and equipment.
Be realistic about the duty cycle: one charge works for roughly 48 hours before it needs recharging, and the pillow can be recharged about four times before it is spent. That makes it a practical way to soften water for a change or for a small tank, not a set-and-forget fix for a large one. Test first with the GH and KH kit so you know what you are starting from.
Recharging
- Dissolve 3 tablespoons of aquarium salt in 7 oz (about 200 ml) of tap water
- Soak the pillow for two hours, then return it to the filter
- Keep a spare pillow stored in the recharge solution — it must not be allowed to dry out
- Replace once it no longer softens after a recharge
- Freshwater aquariums
