The wrap-around pillow sits inside the Desk Nest and gives the cat a raised bolster to rest its head and chin on. Most cats sleep with their head propped when they can, and a flat pad does not offer that.
It also narrows the bed slightly, which suits a cat that curls tight. A cat that sleeps stretched out flat may push it aside - if that is your cat, leave the bed as it comes.
