The Forest Moss Mat is a soft, absorbent mat with a moss-look surface, used as the floor of a humid terrarium in place of loose coco fibre or sphagnum. It holds water and gives some of it back to the air as it evaporates, it is comfortable underfoot for frogs and crested geckos, and it cannot be swallowed along with food the way loose bedding can. What it will not do is let an animal burrow or let live plants root into it, so a digging species or a planted bioactive build needs real substrate instead — or the mat only in the sections where nothing is planted.
Three sizes. Exo Terra lists them as Mini 30 x 30 x 0.5cm, Small 45 x 45 x 0.5cm and Mini Medium 60 x 45 x 0.5cm; the last is the same panel as the 45 x 60cm shown here, quoted the other way round. Measure the inside of the base and trim with scissors. For arid species the Sand Mat Substrate is the desert equivalent, artificial rainforest planting to go with it includes the Boston Fern, and the rest of the range is in our Exo Terra collection.
Features
- Absorbent — holds water from misting and releases it slowly, so humidity does not spike and crash between sprays.
- Soft, non-abrasive surface — suits amphibians and thin-skinned species that a coarse substrate would rub.
- Reduces impaction risk — nothing loose to be picked up with food.
- Cut to fit — trim to the base footprint, or cover only part of the floor and leave the rest for planting.
- Washable — rinse when soiled, replace when it stops coming clean.
