A small ultrasonic fogger that sits in the water — a water dish, a pond area, the reservoir of a waterfall — and turns the surface into cold fog. It is the in-tank option: compact, inexpensive, and it puts fog exactly where the water already is. Two limits are worth knowing before you buy. It needs at least 5cm of water above it to run, so a shallow dish will not do; and it has no controller, so it fogs whenever it is powered rather than holding the enclosure at a set humidity.
For sustained, adjustable humidity across a large or planted enclosure, the external Ultrasonic Humidifying Fog Generator with its 4.5-litre reservoir is the better tool. At 3.8 x 3.8 x 3.7cm this one disappears into most water features — pair it with a reptile fountain water dish or a pebble waterfall. The replacement membrane and key is listed separately.
Features
- Cold fog — the ultrasonic membrane atomises water without heating it, so it will not warm a temperature-sensitive enclosure.
- Humidity to 100% — enough to hold a rainforest enclosure at the top of its range.
- Runs in shallow water — works in as little as 5cm, which is within reach of most terrarium water features.
- Visual effect — rolling ground fog, and a way to simulate early morning dew in a desert setup.
- Breeding cue — a timed wet season is a common trigger for breeding behaviour in tropical species.
- Do not run it dry — the membrane is damaged by operating out of water, so watch the level as it evaporates.
