Despite the name, this is a water treatment rather than decor — it is an absorption-resin ball with a moss-look finish that you drop into the water of a turtle tank or aqua-terrarium and leave alone. It absorbs and traps phosphate, nitrite and nitrate, which are the compounds behind the green haze and the odour in a turtle tank, and it neutralises the chlorine and chloramine in fresh tap water. It is not a filter and does not replace one: it moves no water and traps no solids, so a tank with a real bioload still needs mechanical filtration and still needs water changes.
One ball treats 30-60 litres (10-20 gallons) and works for up to two months, so a 120-litre turtle tank wants two of them and a note in the calendar. Plant extracts in the ball support the beneficial bacteria colony and the animals themselves.
