A carbon-impregnated foam pad that works as mechanical and chemical media in one slot: the foam catches debris while the activated carbon strips odours, discolouration, heavy metals and dissolved organics. Carbon is exhausted well before the foam wears out, so treat this as a monthly consumable rather than a permanent layer. Take it out while you are medicating a tank, because carbon will pull the medication straight back out of the water.
