The Coarse 4 Pack is the mechanical stage: it catches suspended waste and is the pad you rinse and eventually replace on a routine. The Fine Carbon & Zeolite 3 Pack polishes the water and pulls ammonia, which is useful in a new tank, after medicating, or in a small overstocked setup — but zeolite is exhausted rather than rinsed clean, so it is a consumable on a shorter cycle. Care
Rinse the coarse pad in old tank water, never under the tap, so the bacterial colony survives. Replace the carbon and zeolite pad on schedule — exhausted carbon does nothing.
