Granulated rock salt is the middle option between a hard lick block and fine milled salt. The coarser grain slows a horse down, which suits a horse that will hoover fine salt straight out of the feed bin, and it is easier to offer free choice in a covered bucket without it caking.
Use it in feed at a measured rate, or leave it out and let the horse take what it wants. Free choice only works if the salt stays dry - a bucket that fills with rain becomes a brine and gets ignored.
As with any salt, make sure the horse has constant access to clean water. Salt without water is the one way to cause a problem with it.
