Ceramic impeller shaft for the Hydra internal filter range. A chipped or grooved shaft lets the impeller wobble, which is what you hear as a rattle or grinding at start-up. Shafts are cheap and easy to snap during a clean, so it is worth keeping a spare with the filter rather than ordering one when the tank is already noisy.
