An assist-feeding formula for birds that are critically sick, injured or orphaned — glucose and maltodextrin for immediate energy, with albumen and hydrolysed casein for protein that a compromised gut can still absorb. It is the tub wildlife carers keep for the bird that arrives at nine at night.
The order of operations matters more than the product. A cold, dehydrated or shocked bird must be warmed, rehydrated and stabilised before anything is fed — feeding first can kill it.
Typical analysis
- Protein (min) 22%, Fat (min) 6%, Carbohydrate (min) 60%
- Energy 14 MJ/kg
Directions
Mix 6g (2 heaped teaspoons) with 10ml of pre-boiled water at 50 degrees. Allow two minutes to absorb, then feed at 35 degrees with a spoon or syringe. Prepare fresh at every feeding until the bird recovers.
Important
Keep sick or injured birds in a warm environment, around 28 degrees. Treat hypothermia, dehydration and shock first, and seek veterinary advice.
