A solid wooden puzzle box with holes cut in the lid. Drop in toys or a few treats and the cat has to work them out with a paw — the same fishing motion they would use on real prey, which is why it holds a cat's attention longer than a toy that just sits there.
It is a solo-play toy, so it earns its keep in a household where the cat is alone during the day. It will not tire out a cat that wants to chase; that still needs a wand and ten minutes of your time.
Care
Wooden construction — wipe clean, do not soak. Rotate which toys go inside to keep the novelty up.
