Cold pressed flax oil — linseed oil — supplied in bulk for horses and livestock. Flax is the highest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid, the omega-3 that horse people feed for coat and skin condition and for cool, non-heating energy. Cold pressing matters here: heat and light degrade the omega-3 fraction, which is also why an opened drum should be kept out of the sun and used within a reasonable period rather than carried over a season.
Available in 5L and 20L. Part of the Stockhealth range; see also the Health Care range.
Key points
- Cold pressed — Pressed without heat to protect the omega-3 fraction.
- Omega-3 source — Flax is the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid.
- Non-heating energy — Fed as a fat source where extra condition is wanted without extra grain.
- Bulk sizes — 5L and 20L drums.
Feeding
Introduce slowly, starting well below the full rate, and build up over a week or two — an abrupt jump in oil upsets a lot of horses. Feed at the rate on the label. Store the drum closed, out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and use an opened drum within a reasonable period; flax oil goes rancid faster than most feed oils.
