The magnet is what pulls the flap back against the frame and holds it there. When it weakens or the holder cracks, the flap stops sealing - it rattles in wind, lets a draught through, and stops keeping weather out.
This set is for the small cat door. The large dog door magnet comes as part of the latch set.
