Vet's Best Stainless Steel Tick Remover is a fine-pointed stainless tool for getting a tick off a dog or cat properly. The technique matters more than the tool: grip the tick as close to the skin as you can, right at the mouthparts, and pull straight out with steady pressure. Do not twist, do not squeeze the tick's body, and do not use petroleum jelly, methylated spirits or a hot match — all of those make the tick regurgitate into the wound, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.

Supplied as a single tool. Stainless steel, so it can be disinfected and reused rather than thrown away.

Australian tick warning. If you live on or visit the east coast, paralysis ticks are a genuine emergency. Removing the tick is the first step, not the last. A dog or cat that is wobbly on its back legs, has a changed bark or meow, is vomiting, or is breathing oddly needs a vet immediately, even if the tick is already off. Keep the tick in a sealed bag so the vet can identify it, and keep searching — where there is one, there are often more.

Features

  • Fine points — let you grip the head rather than the body, which is the whole trick.
  • Stainless steel — disinfect between uses and keep it in the first aid kit.
  • Dogs and cats — the same tool for both.
  • Small enough to travel — worth keeping in the car if you walk in bush or long grass.

How to Use

Part the fur, grip the tick right against the skin, and pull straight out with firm, even pressure. Check the site afterwards and disinfect the tool. See a vet for any sign of tick paralysis.
