A cordless lithium dog clipper with an adjustable blade — the cutting length moves with a lever rather than by fitting a different blade. For home use that is the format that makes sense: one blade to look after, nothing to lose in a drawer.
Adjustable-blade clippers are at their best on clean, brushed coats of light to medium density. A thick double coat or a matted coat will bog the blade down, and pushing a home clipper through matting is how people end up nicking skin. Brush the coat out first, or take a genuinely matted dog to a groomer.
