By 60% to 70% of pouch life a macropod joey's fine velvet has grown into a short, thickening coat, the eyes are fully open and the ears are erect. It is still confined to the pouch but has its head out regularly. Wombaroo Kangaroo Milk Replacer 0.6 is the formula for that window: matched to mid-lactation kangaroo milk, higher in energy than the 0.4 powder at 32% protein, 28% fat and 21 MJ/kg, and again high in cysteine and methionine — this time for the rapid hair-growth phase rather than its onset. Wombaroo directs it at finely furred joeys just before first pouch emergence. Twenty-two grams of powder makes 100 millilitres of milk. PeekAPaw stocks 220g, 1.1kg and 5kg, which covers a single carer and a rescue group running several joeys at once. Weigh the joey and confirm the stage before you move between formulas.

Feeding Guidelines

Use Kangaroo Milk Replacer 0.6 for finely-furred joeys during mid-lactation, just prior to first pouch emergence.

Making Up Milk

To make 100 mL of milk: Mix 22 g of powder (3 scoops) with 85 mL of warm water.

To make 1 litre of milk: Mix 220 g of powder with 850 mL of warm water.

Add about half the water to the powder first and mix to a paste. Then make up with the remaining water and mix thoroughly. Pre-boil the water to ensure it is sterilised. If the water is too hot, it can cause the milk to curdle. If it is too cold, it will be difficult to disperse the powder. An electric whisk can be used for mixing larger quantities.

Milk can be stored in the fridge for a day or frozen for up to 2 weeks. It may be useful to store frozen milk in small portions (e.g. ice cube trays), so that the required daily feed volumes can be easily thawed out. Once thawed, discard any unused milk and wash feeding utensils thoroughly.
